Cubs

Picture
Cubs are 8-10.5 years old, and meet from 7:10 to 8:30pm on Tuesdays. They learn new skills, play games, make things and most importantly, have fun!

Cubs can earn a huge variety of badges, from astronomy to water activities - see a full list at
https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources/search/?cat=12,67. We give them a chance to try for as many as possible during their time in the section, but they can also earn badges outside Cubs.

In autumn 2016 the Cubs achieved their Athletics, Global Issues and Fire Safety Activity badges. To achieve these, we held a mini-Olympics, discussed clothing production and the rights of children around the world, designed haute couture toilet paper outfits, thought about what items were the most vital to survival following a natural disaster and learnt about water consumption and conservation. For their Fire Safety badges, the Cubs learnt how to light candles and sparklers safely. They lit a fire and cooked marshmallows over it, and had a fire drill.

In summer 2016 the Cubs worked on the original 'Leaping Wolf' badge that Lord Baden-Powell designed for Cubs back in 1916, celebrating their centenary by going right back to the roots of Scouting! They completed activities as varied as growing seeds and lighting fires, as well as putting up a traditional patrol tent

Earlier in the year, they built towers from spaghetti and sweets, tried code breaking and sent secret messages using lemon juice! They also did full-size pioneering, crossed a mine field, made pizzas, tried science experiments, decorated baubles and completed problem-solving challenges.

Cubs also go on lots of trips and outings, and joined us Group Camp in April where they practised some Scouty skills, played games, tried archery and cooked their own meals! In the photo above, you can see them working together to prepare the ingredients for the 'omelette bar' we had for breakfast! More recently, Cubs joined the Scout troop's camp for a night and cooked on an open fire and built a swing, as well as sleeping outside in a tent!
