Group Camp 2016 - Beavers, Cubs and soon-to-be Scouts!

We headed down to Frylands Wood Scout Outdoor Centre from 3rd-4th April 2016 to enjoy the spring weather from the comfort of a hut - which was definitely a good move, since it rained all evening! There was even some thunder and lightning, so we were very grateful for the heaters and indoor toilets!

Once we'd settled in, we headed out into the woods to put the Cubs' new pioneering skills into action, building a model house using square lashings. The Cubs taught the Beavers what they had been learning in their meetings, and helped them to tied square lashings and clove hitches. After a quick game, we ate our packed lunches then went to try out some archery at the campsite's range. Almost everyone managed to hit the target, so we'll have to keep an eye out for budding archers! Everyone had fun rolling down the big hill on Farleigh Field, and the Cubs tried out some lovely new nature-inspired hairstyles...
We had been sent some wildflower seeds by the Grow Wild project, and we helped the other campsite users and the local wildlife by planting them in the chapel. We also made bee hotels and found good spots to leave them for the bees to find. Afterwards, we had a big game of hide and seek in the woodlands and played Twister before dinner - shepherd's pie and vegetables followed by ice cream.
It was raining too hard for a campfire so we had a sing-along indoors before heading to bed. Apparently there was a midnight feast planned, but we'd done such a good job of wearing them out during the day that everyone was asleep by 10pm!

In the morning, the Cubs and leaders ran an omelette bar, where people could pick their favourite toppings for omelette and toast. Next, we went outside for a morning of sports - crickders (cricket and rounders) and rugball (rugby and football) saw the Cubs and Beavers competing for points on a very muddy pitch! Hawk, Akela and Kaa made a valiant attempt at lighting the fire, helped out by the Cubs, while the Beavers had a go on the trampoline, then we cooked pitta pockets filled with a choice of toppings over the embers followed by baked bananas stuffed with chocolate and marshmallows - yummy! The last activity of camp was a very muddy hike up through the woods, arriving back just in time to meet the parents picking up their children.
